Millennials are proving to be a very responsible generation when it comes to the dangers of drinking and driving. In a recent survey by Beer Canada, 82% of people between the ages of 18 and 34 said they had served as a designated driver at some point in the past three years (67% of Gen Xers and 55% of Boomers said the same).
While that’s good news for every one of us and a sign that the message is getting through to younger generations, technology and social media may play more of a role than parents, teachers, and law enforcement. Just over half (51%) of Millennials said the fear of social media shaming was a major factor in their attitude. Essentially, it’s peer pressure in reverse.
"We found that nearly one in three (34 per cent) Millennials, say they're more likely to use social media when they've been drinking," says, Sean Simpson of the Ipsos research firm. "While three in ten (29 per cent) Millennials admit that social media makes them do things they regret when they've been drinking, which likely explains why many are staying clear of mixing the two."
But social media and technology aren’t just causing a dread of shame and regret – they’re actually working together to provide a way for people to plan ahead for a safe ride home. Ride sharing apps and other tech services are letting people find what they need and make the right decisions in the moment. Rather than thinking they’re in good enough condition to drive, these tools put a wealth of resources right in their hands.
From taxi apps to bus schedules to simply being able to text or message a friend, technology is enabling people to find a responsible way home after a night of drinking. The study found 55% of Millennials have used these kinds of apps to get home safely. Only 29% of Gen Xers and 17% of Baby Boomers have done so.
Millennials in BC ranked the highest in the study when it came to understanding drinking safety. Nearly 95% said they take the role of designated driver seriously. Another 80% of BC millennials plan ahead when it comes to drinking. They know how they’re getting home before taking that first sip. And that’s something every one of us can ‘like.’
